Suissa (Almog), Yosef (Chaim)
Son of Avraham and Dalia. He was born on August 20, 1948 in Rabat, Morocco. In 1954 the family immigrated to Israel. For the first time, he began studying at the Habsor elementary school in Moshav Mivtachim and after seventh grade moved to the regional agricultural school “Eshel Hanasi” where he completed his elementary studies. He then moved to the same high school where he graduated. While at Eshel Hanassi School he participated in a sports competition held annually between the agricultural schools. He especially excelled at the football game. In addition to sports, for which he devoted his leisure time, he would love to listen to music, where he loved the work and when he had a vacation he would immediately seek a job to earn something and not burden his parents with expenses. He was very close to his parents and loved to help them with work in the field and with money, and his parents did indeed hope that their son would help them with all that was necessary. The submarines, a service he desperately wanted, even though he knew the dangers involved. Of course, that he had to undergo various tests that required intense will and an extraordinary degree of suffering from him. But he was used to hard work, in these tests and tests he stood and soon entered the mechanics course in the submarine – and in June 1967 he was ordained as a diver. At the end of the course he moved to continue his studies in England and during his service he proved himself as a professional who is prepared to be a combat soldier in the first line of fire. Yosef was admired for his devotion and responsibility, and his commanders and friends. He was attached to the Dakar team and went to England to renovate the submarine. But when the submarine returned to the harbor and was found on the sea route between Gibraltar and Haifa, the connection with it was severed and never renewed; This was on the 24th of Tevet 5728 (25.1.1968). The Chief Military Rabbinate determined that the date of Yosef’s passing, in the course of his duties, together with the rest, was the 29th of Tevet 5728 (30.1.1968). Since he was one of the missing crew members, he was placed with a memorial monument in the memorial to the people of Dakar in the military house on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Eran Shorer, in his book “Six Days in Decker,” commemorated Joseph’s name and memory by bringing his picture. On the 28th of June 1999, after years of searching, the INS Dakar submarine was found on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, at a depth of 2,900 meters on its planned sailing route and 250 miles from the port of Haifa. Burial place is unknown.
