Strauss, Michael


Son of Tova and Ernst, was born on 27.1.1930 in the city of Cologne on the Rhine, Germany. He was about six years old when the family immigrated to Israel in November 1935. His parents settled in Atarot, near Jerusalem, and their farms grew. Michael graduated from the local elementary school and immediately moved to the son of Shemen Youth Village for agricultural training. Where he remained after completing school and working as a guide in the dairy industry. He recently returned to Atarot and worked in his farm. Michael was a member of the Haganah from his youth and served in full mobilization many months before the declaration of the state. During the Mandate he served as a local “saliker” in the Haganah, and in his role in transporting arms and ammunition remained until his death. Michael was killed two days after the declaration of the establishment of the State of Israel on May 16, 1948, when he brought ammunition to his position, which was far from the other positions, and ran about forty yards from the position, but he managed to throw the ammunition into the post He was shot in the head and died in Neve Ya’akov, and his commander offered him a medal for his heroism, and on the 17th of Cheshvan 5710 (November 17, 1949) he was put to rest in the military cemetery Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
