Strauss, John (Hans)

Son of Irma and Albert, was born in 1925 in Mannheim, Germany. He completed elementary school and was one of the last surviving children to immigrate to Eretz Israel in 1939. His parents remained in exile and perished there. He studied at Kfar Shmaryahu for two years while working in the local carpentry workshop. He then moved to the vocational school named after Titz Yagur and completed his profession for a year and a half. After completing his studies he enlisted as a sailor for the British Navy and worked in Egyptian ports. When he was released from service, he returned to Tel Aviv and began working as a carpenter. His civil life was short. He was a very quiet, self-contained fellow, diligent in his work and loving a book. Do his job simply. At the end of 1947 he joined the army and participated in the War of Independence from its inception. Yochanan took part in a raid on the village of Arab a-Zahab near Sejera. The force took over the village and blew up some of its houses, but lingered in its preparations for withdrawal. The Arab forces recovered and began a counterattack. During the difficult retreat, he fell on the 27th of Nissan 5708 (May 6, 1948). His body was found the day after he fell behind a rock. He was buried in Kfar Tavor. On the 19th of Tammuz 5710 (22.6.1950) he was put to rest at the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
