His civil life was short. He was a very quiet, self-contained fellow, diligent in his work and loving a book. Do his job simply. At the end of 1947 he joined the army and participated in the War of Independence from its inception. Yochanan took part in a raid on the village of Arab a-Zahab near Sejera. The force took over the village and blew up some of its houses, but lingered in its preparations for withdrawal. The Arab forces recovered and began a counterattack. During the difficult retreat, he fell on the 27th of Nissan 5708 (May 6, 1948). His body was found the day after he fell behind a rock. He was buried in Kfar Tavor. On the 19th of Tammuz 5710 (22.6.1950) he was put to rest at the Nachlat Yitzhak military cemetery.
