Sternberg, Avraham (“Dolek”)


Son of David and Mina. He was born on October 7, 1922 in Czortkow, Poland. He attended high school and was one of the “Goyim” children. During the Second World War, Avraham fled from the Nazis. Despite his entreaties, his parents did not want to leave their home and the whole family perished. He was then 16 years old and went on foot to the Soviet Union and reached Tashkent, where he lived in wood warehouses and was treated with trust, but did not want to remain in the Diaspora. His family and wandered on to Austria and Italy on his way to Eretz Israel, and he was sick and feverish in his condition, but his illness did not stop him from boarding the ship ” The ship was transported in the stormy sea for twelve days, without a doctor and a sister, and when the ships were hijacked by the British, warships were called in, and the immigrants were all deported to Cyprus. He was active in the camp committees, in courses and courses, but with the outbreak of the War of Independence, he found no rest and was impatient with the day of aliyah, and in February 1949 he immigrated to Israel – after nine years – “I do not need much,” he said, “I do not need a lot” . This optimism accompanied him in his short life in Israel. He believed in himself and saw himself as one of the veterans. He fell in the line of duty on the 19th of Tammuz 5709 (19.7.1949) and was put to rest in the military section of the cemetery in Rehovot.
