Stern, Dan
Son of Frida and David, was born on June 26, 1929 in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Bialik School and was known as an outstanding student, gifted with talent. Due to the difficult economic situation, which became even worse after his father, who volunteered for the British army, was taken prisoner by the Germans, he was forced to stop his studies after completing elementary school and worked daily, bringing his wages home and continuing to supplement his knowledge of evening classes and home schooling. At the end of the war, when the father returned from his captivity, when the burden of making a living was easier on the boy, he went out once a month for training on the kibbutz. Dan joined the Gadna, participated in training, activities and travels, and became the group’s spiritual leader. He had learned ways to get along with this profession and had already submitted his papers for examination. In the meantime, the United Nations decided to establish a Jewish state, and the War of Independence broke out on December 12, 1947. On December 12, 1947 Dan came to the defense of the homeland and served in the Alexandroni Brigade. He participated in activities to break the road to Jerusalem, the battle of Castel, and more. Dan was killed in Operation “Medina” during the conquest of Arab Kfar Saba on May 13, 1948. A monument in his memory was erected at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
