Stern, Dan (Ernest)

Son of-Katrina and Avraham (Alfred) was born on March 4, 1927, in Berlin, Germany, where he studied at the Jewish Gymnasium in Berlin until 1940. That year he immigrated to Israel together with his brother He joined the Ben Shemen Youth Village, where he studied for two years as an apprentice to the Bodenheimer Pension in Haifa. Dan’s first participation in battle was in Nebi Samuel. Towards the end of April 1948, a “Yevusi” operation was carried out in the Jerusalem area. For the purpose of the operation, the Harel Brigade was transferred to Jerusalem and on April 22-23, 1948, its forces attacked Shuafat, Beit Iksa, and Nabi Samuel. The force movement to Nebi Samuel took a long time and the assault began at dawn. In the face of the enemy fire, the force was forced to withdraw and in the difficult retreat in broad daylight there were many casualties. In this battle Dan fell on the 14th of Nissan 5708, April 23, 1948, after being in the army for only 30 days. Dan was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim. He was 21 years old. Four months after his fall, his mother arrived in Israel.
