Steinberger, Avi


Son of Shmuel and Puah. He was born on July 24, 1953 in Givatayim. He studied at the Borochov Elementary School and continued his studies at the Kalei High School in Givatayim. My father was an outstanding student throughout his studies. His elementary school teacher called him ‘the pearl of the class’ and his high school teacher testified to him as one of the few outstanding students at school. He always strove to get to the root of it and the depth of matter. From childhood, Avi had loved music, and he was already conducting the choir in kindergarten. He studied flute and accordion and devoted many hours to his musical hobby. When he was 13, Avi enrolled as a trainee for Maccabi Ramat Gan basketball team; Where he served and played, until his enlistment in the IDF, in the youth group, the youth and the adults, and as an outstanding player, he joined the national team, and despite his many occupations he joined the Hanoar Haoved Vehalomed movement and took part in all the activities of the youth movement. And when he finished high school, he decided to work in Eilat in the building to save a little money – but because of the resistance, he decided to work in Eilat in order to save some money. His father returned home two months later, and Avi was drafted into the IDF in November 1971 Was placed in the paratroopers’ corps. After completing basic training, he was sent to the Paratroopers Course and finished as an outstanding apprentice, and was immediately sent to the officers’ course and completed his course as an outstanding apprentice.As his friends testify, Avi discovered, at all stages of the military training, great kindness and a strong desire to help everyone He did not complain when he encountered difficult situations and always knew how to satisfy his commanders, as a guide and a commander in charge, he showed great responsibility for his subordinates and knew how to find the middle ground between the toughness and the loving and paternal attitude. His friends testify that his companies always completed the courses he taught them as excellence. In the Yom Kippur War, Avi voluntarily left the company that had guided and joined his battalion in Sinai to take part in the battles. A few months later, Avi immigrated with his battalion to the Golan Heights and took part in the War of Attrition in the Beit Jann farm as a commander of a post. On the 27th of Iyar 5734 (27.4.1974) Avi fell in battle at Mount Hermon when he was hit by enemy shelling and was brought to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul and left behind his parents and brother. 20 months in which a recruit has grown up to an officer, while his level rises all the way. The Maccabi Ramat Gan team purchased a trophy in his name and held annual youth tournaments in memory of him. It was also decided to call the local youth group after him.
