Steinberg, David (Walter)


Son of Paula and Hermann, was born on 28.4.1916 in the city of Dortmund, Germany, and attended elementary and high school. David was active in the Jewish youth movement, and recently, during the first years of the Nazi regime, he was a member of the Werkleute movement, which later merged with Hashomer Hatzair. He left for Italy and after his immigration to Eretz Israel in 1938 and joined the kibbutz. When he arrived after many doubts to recognize the truth of the Communist idea left the kibbutz, worked as a gardener and a laborer in Kiryat Bialik and the surrounding area and finally got regular work in the workshops of the train. Was devoted to the activities of his party, organized a group of German speakers and acted as an explanation in a youth group. When his turn came, he enlisted to defend the homeland and served in the Golani brigade. He participated in the systems of the Jordan Valley and the Lower Galilee, suffered slight and healthy wounds. After the first truce, he was sent back to the Galilee because he did not want to part with his friends, and joined the exiles and bread in the Lower Galilee. On July 11, 1948, he was injured during the attack of the Kaukji forces on Sejera and died in Afula Hospital on July 14, 1948. He was buried in Kfar Tavor on June 22, 1950, He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Netanya.
