Steinbach, Moshe (“Moishele”)

Son of Yehuda and Sheindl. Was born in Milan, Italy on July 31, 1948. In July of that year the family immigrated to Israel and settled in the southern port city of Eilat, where the father and his brother worked in the Timna mines, while the boy, somewhat withdrawn, found a new way to the sea. He studied at the local elementary school, where he continued in the local high school and chose the maritime movement, and he was a member of the Hanoar Haoved movement, where he saw his future in the Israeli Merchant Navy, After completing his three-year studies in Eilat, he joined the merchant fleet and sailed to various countries, but he did not want to convert to military service Signing the merchant marine service, that said: “The army must do; I will not be late for the merchant fleet. “In February 1967 he was drafted into the IDF and during his nine months of military service he completed a course for a steam-engine mechanic. During the Six-Day War, he served on a navy ship that hit an Egyptian submarine and later became one of the destroyers of Eilat. During his service in the naval battle in which two Egyptian torpedoes were drowned. Before he completed his compulsory service, in which he demonstrated his diligence and efficiency in the work, out of his devotion and loyalty to his duties, the destroyer “Eilat” was sunk by Egyptian missiles in front of a Romanian beach in northern Sinai. This was on the 18 th of Tishrei 5728 (October 21, 1967). He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul.
