He wanted to enlist in one of the elite units of the Israel Defense Forces and was able to join the Sayeret, and he was recruited to the IDF in mid-August 1969. He underwent hard times in basic training. He was a yeshiva student who lacked proper physical fitness, was observant among many kibbutzniks in the Sayeret, and in his quiet and pleasant way, his great perseverance and great integrity soon managed to stand out and become fond of all his friends and commanders until he became the “conscience of the Sayeret.” . After basic training, he underwent a course for squadrons and a course from explosive devices. In his spare time he set up times for the Torah and used to explain religious problems and faith to his friends, with his natural, special pleasure. As a commander, he knew how to lead his subordinates without access and resentment, but with quiet speech and a pleasant smile of kindness. During his service he was wounded by shrapnel from a grenade that hit him and the doctors forbade him to return to the commando unit, but he made many persuasive efforts and in conversations with his commanders managed to “extort” a promise that he would be returned to the unit until he recovered. His commanders say that in a few days he was already in operational activity, quietly and modestly, because he had not recovered yet. After a while, his commanders offered him an officer’s course. On the eve of his fall, he spoke with his comrades-in-arms about remaining in the army, and some told him of their intention to sign a permanent army service, but Reuven told them: “I am a permanent signer in the army of God” “On February 6, 1972, as deputy commander of a platoon, he led one of the crews on a patrol against terrorists, and during this tour he died, while carrying out his duties . His friends said that Reuven’s religiosity, his exemplary behavior and the spirit of his sacrifice, radiated on them and constantly preached tolerance to the residents of Gaza (because they, too, were created in the image, he said).
