Spiegelman, Levi

Levi, son of Chaya and Avraham Spiegelman, was born on March 21, 1902 in the city of Płońsk, Poland, and studied in a government school. Already in his youth he assumed the status of a leader among his comrades and headed the defense of Hebrew boys against the Polish boys. The slogan “Levi is coming” was enough to scare away the “enemy”. After the liberation of Poland, he dared to attack individual military guards who abused a Jew in front of all the workers in the factory and released him from their hands. After two attempts, during which he was arrested and imprisoned, he succeeded in fulfilling his life’s desire and arrived in Israel in February 1921.
He invested his energies in the Haganah. Even among the Arabs, he earned a name for his willingness to come to the aid of others, his friendship and his firmness. At the beginning of the War of Independence, on the outskirts of Jerusalem he was seriously injured and died three weeks later, on 22 Tevet (4.1.1948). Yehuda was brought to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim, and was later awarded the rank of Major.
