Sommer, Arnon


Arnon, son of Sarah and Menachem, was born on June 1, 1949 in Jaffa, where he studied at the Gordon Elementary School in Bat-Yam and at Technikom High School in Givatayim. Arnon was a good student, and from a young age he discovered a talent for painting, and after completing his studies at the elementary school he was examined and sent to study in graphic arts. He was drafted into the IDF in early February 1968 and assigned to the Armored Corps. After completing basic training he underwent training and served as a tank driver in one of the armored units in the south. In time he was sent to a tank commanders course and completed it successfully. After that, he served as a tank commander until the end of compulsory service. He was a responsible and dedicated soldier, and in the units where he served, he bought him many friends whom he liked because of his comfortable temperament. During his service in the IDF, he continued to paint and create works in graphic arts, and after graduating from compulsory service he began to work as an independent graphic artist, working on animation, designing book covers, drawing cartoons and even planning games for children. In the Yom Kippur War, Arnon participated as a tank commander in the battles of containment and infiltration against the Syrians on the Golan Heights, and during his armor attack on October 8, 1973, he was killed. He was brought to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul and left behind a wife, parents and sister.
