Sofer, Avraham


Avraham, son of Yaffa and David Sofer, was born on August 30, 1923 in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. When he was four, his parents immigrated to Israel and settled in Jerusalem. At the beginning of the Second World War he enlisted without his parents’ knowledge into the British Army, and at the request of his parents, who relied on his young age, was released against his will. After 18 years of service he enlisted for the third time and was then accepted to serve in the mixed Palestinian Regiment and was active in internal propaganda and requests for the separation of Jewish soldiers into special battalions. and he was meticulous in his order and discipline and exemplary behavior. In the outbreak of the War of Independence, he continued his military service in Ramat Rachel and various positions in the city. On April 13, 1948, he fell in a battle while part of a convoy that was ambushed by Arabs. He was laid to rest in a mass grave in the Sanhedria cemetery.
