Slutski, Chaim (Chaimke)

Chaim, son of Hannah and Dov Slutski, was born in 1929 in the settlement of Menachemia. He grew up in the village, completed his local elementary school, worked in agriculture for his parents, and was very helpful from a very young age. As a member of Hanoar Haoved and a member of the Hagana from his youth, he responded to the first call by the farmers of the Jordan Valley and came to the aid of the besieged Kibbutz Gesher. On May 14, 1948, with the declaration of the state and the invasion of the Arab armies, four men from Menachemia were sent to the bridge to complete a platoon (from the Barak Battalion). Chaim was Simcha that he was included in this group. He only served for two days when he fell. He was sent to bring food to the people of the southern position of the Gesher police station, and when he left the yard, ten steps away, he was seriously injured by a shell. He died on the way to the doctor on the 7th of Iyar 5708 (May 16, 1948.) He was laid to rest in the cemetery in Menachemia.
