On March 15, 1948, he enlisted in the Palmach. As a husband and farmer, he did not have to be drafted. When he was offered an administrative service, he refused to accept him and demanded that he participate in combat operations. Aryeh volunteered, two weeks after enlisting, to escort a convoy of supplies and equipment from Jerusalem to Gush Etzion.
