Singer, David

David, son of Elisheva and Moshe Singer, was born in 1922 in the city of Sutziba, Bukovina, Romania. In his youth, he studied at the Vizhnitz Yeshiva and graduated from high school. In 1942 he immigrated to Israel as a member of the Bnei Akiva movement and joined Kibbutz Kfar Etzion. From his first day in the kibbutz he was a member of the Haganah. In order to bring his mother to Israel, he had to leave the kibbutz and look for work. David worked as a guard and later settled in Jerusalem and worked as a furrier. In the evenings he served as a guide in the Haganah. After he managed to bring his mother from Transnistria, he took care of her livelihood. David was a man of action and broad-mindedness.
During the War of Independence he served in the Jerusalem Brigade and participated in battles to protect the city, in the conquest of Katamon and the attempt to break into the Old City. He was killed by a shell in the Sheikh Jarrah area on the 19th of Iyar 5708 (May 28, 1948). He was buried in Sheikh Bader Aleph. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
