Singer, Abba
Son of Liba and Chaim, was born on October 5, 1928, in the city of Rozyszcze, Poland. He attended a Hebrew elementary school and was educated in the spirit of Zionism. As a boy he was taken to Nazi labor camps and held out until liberation. He did not find the remnants of his scattered family and went to the DP camps and to training in Germany and Italy. In 1947 he managed to reach Israel as an immigrant on the Shabtai Lozinski ship and immediately joined Kibbutz Mizra. In December 1947, he came to the defense of the homeland and participated in the defense of the Jewish National Fund (near Beit Dagan), in the battles of Tel Arish and Latrun, as a soldier in the Givati Brigade. In every action he excelled with devotion and enthusiasm, and with the speed of a cat he was able to avoid enemy bombardment. He recently took part in a campaign against the Egyptian invaders. On the night of June 2-3, 1948, during the “Philistine” operation, Givati forces attacked the Egyptian alignment near the Ashdod Bridge (the “Ad Halom” bridge today). The assault was halted by heavy enemy fire and the forces were forced to retreat. The attack failed, but forced the Egyptians to prepare for the ground and halted their advance northwards. In this battle he fell, on the day of the fifth of Iyar 5708 (June 3, 1948). On the first day of Cheshvan 5710 (31.10.1951) he was brought to eternal rest in the cemetery in Kiryat Shaul.
