Simon, Shabtai

Son of David and Poe. He was born on August 11, 1952 in Tel Aviv and studied at the “Ayalon” elementary school, graduating with honors from the “Shevach” vocational school in Tel Aviv, and excelled mainly in the real professions. He was a brilliant student, understood things before they were explained – – – was always willing to help and was therefore loved by his teachers and friends alike – . Eery word that came out of his mouth was practical and reasonable – for him, love of the homeland and devotion to it without reservation, were obvious. He excelled in sports and was particularly active in football – – – never did anything wrong. Was honest and fair, above all was a ‘man’. When I told him that the place of a school graduate in the Ordnance Corps or the Air Force said: “I want a combat unit!” Shabtai joined the IDF in early November 1970 and volunteered to serve in a combat engineering unit, successfully passing a platoon-level course. His success in his position and his aspiration to move forward and serve the country led him to the Officers’ Course and the Engineering Corps course, which he successfully completed. He was considered an excellent officer thanks to his energy, dedication, initiative and thinking. At first he served as a platoon commander in the Corps of Engineering Corps course, and later became the deputy commander of the course, and he was always the focus of joy and friendship in the company, and he always knew how to draw a line between seriousness and mischief. He took full advantage of his abilities and tried to raise his subordinates to his own level, to better achievements, to better skill, and to excellent teamwork. In 17 August 1973, Lieutenant Shabtai fell in the line of duty And was put to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul, and his commander wrote in a letter of condolence to the family: …always dedicated to the common good – his unit to his friends and subordinates. In his course, he showed great talent, originality and dedication. We valued him as the best of the platoon commanders. Because of these achievements, I even appointed him, before all his friends, as deputy commander of the course. “On the anniversary of his fall, his comrades published a booklet entitled” Shabtai “.
