Shturman, Haim


Son of Moshe and Rauma. He was born on September 14, 1946 in Kibbutz Ein Harod. Haim, born on the day of the kibbutz’s founding, was named after his grandfather, Chaim Shturman, who was a member of Hashomer, one of the founders of Ein Harod and its defenders and Jewish settlement activists in the Jezreel Valley, who fell on September 15, 1938. During the War of Independence, Haim’s father, a member of the Palmach, was killed in a battle over her sergeants, thus stamping the life of Chaim, the bearer of bereavement and heroism, who set his sights on the future. Life was drafted mid-November 1965 he volunteered to serve in the unit whose operations difficult and dangerous – Navy SEALS. Even during the difficult training period and in the operational activities of the unit, Haim stood out as an excellent soldier, resourceful and courageous and a loyal friend of his comrades and brothers in arms. When a guide was appointed in the unit he did much to improve the operational fitness of these fighters. One of his daring actions was praised by the commander of the navy and won the medal of honor (14.7.1967). On the 20th of Av 5729 (20.7.1969), Lt. Col. Haim was killed in a raid on the island of Green on the Gulf of Suez. He was brought to rest in the cemetery at Kibbutz Ein Harod. On the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the fall, the kibbutz published a booklet in his memory; Also published were lists and articles of appreciation in the IDF weekly “Bamahane” and in the daily press, and recently published a book called “Basalt Men”, in which the story of the exploits and heroism of the Shturman family was reported.
