Shrem, Rahamim

Rahamim, son of Esther and Joseph Shrem, was born in 1916 in Aleppo, Syria. He immigrated to Israel in 1936 and lived in one of the neighborhoods on the Jaffa-Tel Aviv border. More than once Rahamim protected his neighbors from Arab assaults. He worked as a laborer and established a family. He was cheerful and hospitable and loved by his neighbors and acquaintances.
With the outbreak of the War of Independence Rahamim enlisted. He was offered a job as a cook, but he refused and demanded that they put him in an armored unit and eventually he served in the Oded Brigade. On June 10, 1948, he left with his company to protect Mishmar Hayarden, which was under heavy Syrian attack and fell into enemy hands. According to his friend’s testimony, Rahamim refused to remain at the base despite being wounded in the leg. Rahamim saw his commander fall, but did not flinch and continued to cover his friends until he was wounded in the head. Without worrying about his wound, he called his friends and demanded that they take the machine gun, which was then most precious, and asked them to take care of his family. Rahamim fell on athe 3rd of Tamuz, July 10, 1948. He was survived by a wife, Sarah, and two children, and his body was found after a long search and was brought to the military cemetery in Rosh Pina.
