Shragher, Gershon


Gershon, son of Sarah and Abraham Shragher, was born in 1909 in the city of Lvov in eastern Galicia. He completed high school and in 1935 immigrated to Israel. He lived with his wife and son in the Tel Yehuda neighborhood of Ramat Gan and worked as a bookkeeper in the Argaman factory. He was a veteran member of the Haganah and active in its training. During the Independence War, Gershon served in the Yishuv, and during Operation “Dani” our forces took control of the Modi’in area. On September 23, 1948, the outpost was attacked by local Arabs and with the help of the Legion, unexpectedly and in violation of the second truce. The defenders of the outpost were surprised and forced to retreat and many were injured in the severe retreat. The next day, our forces attacked and conquered the outpost. In this battle, Gershon fell on the 20th of Elul 5708 (24.9.1948) and was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak.
