Shpaner, Yitzhak (Izzy)

Yitzchak (Izzy), son of Chana and Reuven Shpaner, was born on December 22, 1920 in Berlin, the capital of Germany, and immigrated to Israel in 1935. In Israel he could not continue his studies because the financial situation of his large family did not allow it. Yitzhak therefore began to study framework and tinsmithing at the age of 15. He showed a special talent for technical painting and delicate mechanics. Izzy aspired to be an aircraft engineer but was forced to pay on his own, and he did so with great devotion after a hard day’s work. He was a veteran member of the Haganah and excelled in shooting. During the War of Independence Yitzhak was among the defenders of Jerusalem. His father was captured by the Legion in the Old City, but absent from the list of prisoners. Yitzhak went to the Red Cross office every day to learn about the fate of his father, and on the 29th of Iyar 5708 (June 7, 1948) he was hit by a shell and died on the spot. He was buried in Sheikh Bader Aleph. On the 28th of Elul 5710 (10.9.1950) he was laid to rest at the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
