Shoshani, Rosenthal Jacob (“Yankele”)
The only son of Israel and Sheyna. He was born in Lodz, Poland on February 1, 1928. At the age of 14 he arrived in Eretz Israel with Anders’ army but fled from it and stayed in Israel for two years. He enlisted in the Hebrew settlement police and served there as commander of the garrison of Ginegar until the establishment of the state. As a deserter from the Anders army and before enlisting in the Nutras, Jacob adopted his mother’s name (Rosenthal) to avoid being identified by the British authorities. However, when the State of Israel and the IDF began to call themselves “Shoshani”, and during his entire service in the IDF, he took a course in 1947 and during the War of Independence he participated in the battles for the conquest of Nazareth, the Megiddo region, and so’. After the battles and until his release from the IDF, he was in charge of combat commanders, and he joined the moshav of Balfouria as an agricultural farmer, where he established his home. During the period of his activity in the kibbutz and in the village, he went on training in the immigrant moshavim in the Negev, and in the course of his civilian life, continued to fill positions in his reserve unit. But above all he was a diligent farmer, diligent and successful and loved the farm life and the village. Finally, at the outbreak of the Six-Day War, he fell into the distance from his home on the Afula road – Jenin as a company commander in the same area where he fought and conquered the War of Independence; It was on the second day of the battles, on the 27th of Iyar 5767 (June 6, 1967), in a battle that took place near the village of Muqibla in Samaria, when it set out towards an Israeli armored column moving towards enemy positions. A minefield was deployed at the base of the outpost and Jacob was assigned to prevent the Israeli forces from advancing on the mines. He left a wife and three daughters. He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Nahariya. A pamphlet issued by the Jezreel Regional Council raised his memory.
