Shmul, Menachem
Son of Tzippora and David. He was born in 1915 in Safed. In his youth he was a member of Hanoar Haoved and later became one of the movement’s activists. In 1936 he joined the Association of Guardians. Within the framework of the association he operated in all parts of the country, harming the herds of guards and guarding at various points throughout the country. On the evening of the 21st of Tammuz 5707 (2.7.1945), in the evening hours, the “Aleph HaDamon” (Yachin orchards) went out to the site near Rehovot. He was driven in the car to the nearby Arab village of Naana, where he got out of the car and told the driver that he was going to the Arab grocer in the village, from where he would take his horse and ride to the guard post in the orchard. After failing to reach the scene, his fellow guards assumed that he had remained in the streets due to the fever that had recently afflicted him. But after a day, when it became clear that he had not stayed in the settlement, the guards began to search for him. On the morning of May 2, 1945, his body was found in a field near his place of preservation. It turned out that he had been stabbed and tortured by his murderers and then shot and killed him. Next to his corpse were traces of the murderer’s house in the village of Naana. Menahem was buried in the graves of the guardians of Sheikh Abrik. left a wife and a son born after his death and named after him. His name was immortalized in a memorial booklet for members of the Society of Guards – figures – guards, defenders, fighters.
