Shmuelof, Ben Zion


Son of Esther and Yeshayahu, was born on the 3rd of Adar, February 24, 1928 in Afghanistan, and he immigrated to Israel with his family when he was about three years old. On November 29, 1949, at the outbreak of the War of Independence. Ben-Zion fought in the ranks of the underground on the Jaffa-Tel Aviv border. With the declaration of the establishment of the Israel Defense Forces, he joined the ranks and served in the Golani Brigade, but because of his poor health he was not allowed to participate in combat duties, instead he worked in the camp as a mechanic and plumber. After his vigorous demands Ben Zion was sent for combat operations. He participated in battles in the Galilee and upon his release he moved to the Negev. Ben Zion spent two weeks in the Negev, participated in Operation Assaf and was in a force that held the Sheik-Nuran strongholds. On the 6th of Kislev 5709 (December 8, 1948), when Ben-Zion was sent to fetch water, a shrapnel hit him and he fell. He was buried on the border, and on 16 Av, August 11, 1949 he was transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery in Nahalat Yitzhak.
