Shmueli, Shmuel (Sammy)

Shmueli, Shmuel (Sammy)

Son of Rachel-Rashel and Yakov, was born on the 12th of Sivan (25.5.1926) in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. From his youth he was educated in the spirit of Zionism and all his thoughts were directed at emigrating to Israel. Shmuel was a member of the “Hashomer Hatzair” movement and invested his best energies in it. Toward the end of World War II, on August 1, 1944 he came to Israel. As soon as the War of Independence began, he joined the army and served in the Alexandroni Brigade, as a sniper and a tour guide. In his letters to his parents, Shmuel did not mention that he had enlisted, so they would not worry. Once, after a short vacation, he found a telegram that his brother had come to Israel and was located in Mishmar Ha’emek. Shmuel reached his brother after overcoming many difficulties. He stayed with him only one night and hurried back to his company on time, because he was a punctual soldier. Shmuel fell in the battle for Kfar Saba, when a shell penetrated the armored vehicle during a patrol on the 4th of Iyar 5708 (13.5.1948). He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Nahalat Yitzhak.
