Shmueli (Reuch), Kalman


Son of Breindel and Shmuel, was born on May 20, 1922 in the city of Sanok, Galicia, Poland, to a family of landowners in the village. During the Second World War, he and his brother, the only surviving members of the family, escaped to Russia. Where they joined the Polish army of General Anders, and on 10 November 1942 arrived there with him. Upon his arrival he left the Polish army and was accepted with his brother to the Maaleh Hahamisha group, where he worked as a coachman, from the time he was able to take care of working animals from his childhood at his father’s estate. After a while he moved with his brother to Netanya, where he worked in construction. He also dealt in sports, swimming and soccer. He married a wife and settled in Petah Tikva. At the beginning of the War of Independence he was a member of the “People’s Guard” and later was drafted into the army, served in the Alexandroni Brigade and participated in the battles. A few days before his fall, he had come home for a short and sick leave, but he had recovered before he recovered despite his family’s insistence that they would not let others fight and risk for him. He participated in the “Danny” operation and fell in the conquest of Migdal Tzedek on the 12th of Tammuz 5708 (July 12, 1948.) He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Petah Tikva.
