Shitrit, Eliyahu (Eli)


Son of Zahava and Meir, was born on April 17, 1926 in Haifa, where he studied at an elementary and high school and studied at the vocational school of the Technion in Haifa. “Noar HaOved” At the same time as his studies and later in his work, he devoted 7 years of his life to the Haganah and completed a course for commanders. He was a member of Hapoel and the Young Guard in Haifa. At the outbreak of the War of Independence, he enlisted immediately and took an active part in the defense of the city and its liberation, and stood out for its willingness and self-sacrifice by removing a wounded member from the range of enemy fire in Wadi-Rashmiya. When he was stationed in the “Carmeli” brigade, he went north with her and passed her battles while he was in charge of the Beza (the heavy machine gun in those days). He took part in the operation “Brosh” to destroy the Syrian bridgehead in the Mishmar Hayarden area and was wounded in the battle of Umm-At-Tuna near Yatta. Molotov cocktails and the heavy machine gun removed three Syrian tanks from use. Elijah was wounded in the leg and later in the stomach, but continued to shoot and did not want to retreat until he was hit in the head and died immediately after he was brought to the hospital on July 10, 1948. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Rosh Pina.
