Shimon, Abed
Son of Cazna and Chai. He was born on January 1, 1931 in the city of Karkuk in northern Iraq. Abed studied at the Musli School in Kirkuk and completed his studies there. In his youth he was a member of the local Hechalutz movement, where his friends called him Ze’ev. At the end of his studies he began working at the Petroleum Company of Cyprus as a telegram clerk and continued his work until the winter of 1951, when he immigrated to Israel. Abed was sent to the Ramat Yishai transit camp and from there to the Kiryat Nahum transit camp. In 1954 he moved with his family to Kiryat Ata, where they built their home. Abed was well absorbed in Israel and began working in the telegram department at the Haifa Post Office. Later, he was drafted into the IDF and served as a liaison in the Armored Corps, and after his discharge from the IDF returned to work at the Postal Authority. With the outbreak of the Sinai War he was called up for reserve duty and went down to Sinai. He participated in the battle for Abu-Agila and has since disappeared. Abed was declared missing from the 26th of Cheshvan 5710 (31.10.1956) and it is still unknown to him what happened to him. He left a father, three sisters – Rina, Ilana and Carmela and three brothers – Ezra, Naftali and David. Abed’s name is commemorated at the memorial site of the Armored Corps in Latrun. His burial place is unknown.
