Shevet, Menachem
Menachem, son of Sonia and Abraham Shevet, was born in 1924, in Nahalal, at the beginning of the moshav’s days. His family left Nahalal and moved to Haifa. Menachem grew up and became a farmer and a “Haganah” man who trained at Ramat Yochanan. During the Second World War he enlisted in the British Army and served in the Jewish Brigade. When he returned to Israel after being discharged from the British army, he was immediately called to active duty in the Hagana.
As a unit commander he participated in the explosion of bridges in the Valley of Netofa. At the beginning of the War of Independence, he served as an infantry commander in the Carmeli Brigade. Moshe participated in a retaliatory action against the village of the rioters in Ladd a-Sheikh. He then moved to Nahariya and was active in securing the road from Acre to Haifa. He was in the Yechiam convoy and managed to break through with his car and save the lives of nine friends, who together reached the besieged point.
After stopping the invasion of the Jordan Valley, our forces took the initiative and attacked the Gilboa area. After gaining control of the Gilboa ridge, the Carmeli Brigade attacked Jenin on the night of June 2-3, 1948, and occupied the outposts controlling the city. The Iraqi army, which moved to the Shomron after its failure in the Jordan Valley, concentrated its forces and counterattacked, and under this attack our forces were forced to withdraw.
In this battle he fell on the 25th of Iyar 5708 (June 3, 1948). After he fell, he was awarded the rank of lieutenant. He left behind a wife and a daughter. His younger brother, Eliezer (Yelinka) preceded him with a heroic death. The two heroic brothers were memorialized in the book “Asher Shaculanu” in memory of the sons of Nahalal. On 3.8.1950, he was transferred to eternal rest in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem.
