Shevet, Eliezer (Chili)

Shevet, Eliezer (Chili)

Son of Sonia and Avraham, was born on September 15, 1927, in Moshav Nahalal, where he underwent all stages of education and work in the parents’ farm. He especially excelled at working in the dairy barn. In sports, too, he was one of the best – a healthy mind in a healthy body in the full sense of the word. When he studied at the vocational school in Haifa, he was the mainstay of the school team and Hapoel Haifa in basketball, and in the other sports he was one of the most outstanding. In the fall of 1947 he was one of the representatives of the Jewish Land of Israel at the International Youth Festival in Prague. On his way he absorbed experiences of knowing nations and countries and wonderful landscapes, and the lesson he derived from all these was: There is nothing Yaffa like our country. Shortly after his return home, Eliezer (“Yelinka” in his mother’s mouth) followed his brother Menahem and volunteered for the Palmach (in the Gadna and in other Haganah frameworks, he was active from a very young age). Every short visit to the village he would find time to help with the farm. When he learned of the decision of a parents’ meeting to demand a vacation and the convenience of their children in training, he wrote to his parents: “I hope that he will not be allowed to visit Nahalal, but in his letters he persuaded the parents to be patient and consider the situation. “After his return from the course, he participated in escorting convoys between the Upper Galilee and Tiberias and in the attack on the village of the murderers in the Upper Galilee, and recently participated in the attempt to capture the Nabi Yosha fortress as the commander and commander of the machine gunners covering the burglars and the saboteurs. The second attack on the Nebi Yusha police force took place on the night of 19-20 April 1948. The saboteurs broke through the fences, approached the building and began to place the explosives. In the process, grenades were thrown at them, causing casualties. The evacuation of the casualties delayed the explosion, and in the meantime, additional fighters were injured, including the terrorists and the bomb was not activated. At dawn, orders were given to withdraw. The withdrawal was carried out with the combat of considerable enemy forces summoned to the scene and there were many casualties. Eliezer was on duty until the last minute, when his soldiers were wounded and wounded when he was wounded. He tried to roll himself down the steep slope, but his forces were not enough. After five hours of suffering, he was murdered by Arabs on the battlefield. Eliezer fell on the tenth of Nissan 5708 (April 20, 1948)). He was laid to rest in the Nebi Yusha cemetery. At the same time, his older brother Menahem was in the siege of Yehiam and two months later he fell in the Jenin area. The memory of the two heroic brothers was raised in the book “Asher Shachlanu” in memory of the sons of Nahalal.
