Sherman, Yosef (Harry)


Son of Sabina and Yitzhak, was born on February 18, 1818, in Berlin, the capital of Germany. When he was five years old, his father died and moved in with his mother and older brother to his mother’s parents’ home. Until the age of 15, he studied at the Gymnasium and when he was forced to leave the country, he was forced to stop his studies and for two years helped his mother in the family’s footwear trade. But the business of commerce did not satisfy his soul, which aspired to be absorbed in the work of the Land of Israel. In November 1935 he immigrated to Israel and during his two years of study and work at Mikvah Israel he sought and found friendships with native Israelis, in order to speed up the process of his absorption in Eretz Israel in language, emotions and lifestyle. In his cheerfulness and kindness he was loved by all he knew. After the family immigrated to Israel in early 1939, he increased his work in order to earn a living, but his joy and willingness to come to the aid of his neighbors with advice and action did not diminish. In 1944 he married, and after two years he had a son, because of his weakness, because of fever attacks, he abandoned agriculture in 1944 and opened a bookshop and library in the center of Nahariya. 1948, to a regiment in the “Carmeli” brigade, despite his weakness, he made an effort to fulfill his duty properly in training and fighting against the Syrian invader. in the fierce battles that took place in this area, Yosef fell on the 3rd of Tammuz (July 10, 1948). He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Rosh Pina.
