Shemesh, Uri

Son of Naim and Zvia. He was born on March 8, 1955, in Ramat Gan. He studied at the Alumim Institute in Kfar Sava. Afterward he studied at the Merkaz Elementary School in Ramat Gan and graduated from the Modi’in High School. When Uri was eight years old, he lost his father and was sent to a boarding school with his brother Ilan. “I was only a year younger than him,” says Ilan, “but in the winter I could not get a sweater and Uri, who managed to get one for himself, gave it to me and froze for me.” The relationship between Uri and his brother became closer and later they were very attached to each other and did not part with everything they did. The sport he loved most was football and he worked for him in the “Hakoach Maccabi” team in Ramat Gan, where he played. Uri was an avid cyclist and an excellent swimmer. He spent a lot of time in the swimming pool and at the sea, astonishing everyone with his spectacular leaps from the high jump and the great distances he took in his swimming without any effort. “Uri’s mother, who bore the burden of the family on her own, tried to give Uri, his brother and sister everything they wanted. Uri traveled to Israel in July 1973 and volunteered for the first time in Israel, The paratroopers. After basic training, and after completing a parachuting course that was successfully completed, he was sent to the Golan Heights.
