Due to the poor economic situation of the large family, Yehoshua refrained from continuing to receive formal education. He was looking for casual work to help housekeeping. Most of his work was in agriculture, on Kibbutz Massada. In mid-November 1960, Yehoshua was drafted into the IDF, where he underwent training courses for cooks and kashrut and was employed for most of his service.
