Shemesh, Eliyahu

Eliyahu, son of Najia and Jacob, was born on August 11, 1950, in Baghdad, and immigrated with his family to Israel when he was less than a year old. Eliahu was drafted into the IDF in early August 1968 and assigned to the Signal Corps, where he served in one of the most difficult, secret and responsible positions as a sergeant. In this position, he served in liaison units of combat units in the field, in exercises and maneuvers, and filled all his duties to the satisfaction of his commanders and instructors, and even reached the rank of sergeant. Throughout his service he had been a model soldier, never complaining, and always Simcha with his lot disciplined and doing his best. At the end of his regular service, he was released and assigned to a reserve unit. After his discharge, he went to study at the Faculty of Economics and Accounting at Bar-Ilan University. He completed two years of study successfully, and during those two years he studied in the evenings, and on the day worked in an accounting firm. Elijah was observant, diligent in prayer, and at every hour of leisure, he went to the yeshiva to study a Gemara or to study Torah literature. His commanders in the army noted that even during the war, he used to gather soldiers for a minyan and made sure to hold public prayer, which was also attended by non-religious soldiers. Elijah was very attached to his family and loved his friends and friends. He was grateful to his parents for the education they had given him at home and for the Jewish culture he had absorbed. During the Yom Kippur War, he was drafted and served as a serpent in the Armored Corps’ Armored Corps, which fought in the central sector of the Suez Canal. On the 27th of Tishrei 5734 (23.10.1973) Eliahu was injured and killed in the shelling of the Egyptians on the parking lot of his unit. He was laid to rest in the Petah Tikva cemetery. Survived by his parents, three brothers and five sisters.
