Shemer (Cohen), Eliahu (“Eli”)


Son of Yitzhak and Sarah Cohen. Born in Damascus, Syria on April 20, 1939, he immigrated to Israel with his family in 1945. He studied at the Gordon Elementary School in Holon and after graduating from elementary school, He joined the IDF in July 1957 and joined the ranks of the Nahal Brigade, and thanks to his leadership he was sent from the core to a course for commanders, To a course for medium-sized machine guns and then to an officers ‘course and volunteered for the paratroop brigade, while he was studying at the IDF Teachers’ College in Tel Aviv And ordained priesthood. After graduating from the regular army, he served as a teacher in schools in Holon and Herzliya, but was always drawn to security matters and after teaching for a while he worked for the Gadna as a center for shooting clubs in the southern region, especially Ashdod. The army called on the officers to join the regular army, and was sent to the Gadna, but he could not rest until he was attached to a combat unit. During his service in the Jordan Valley, he was wounded, and after he recovered he was transferred to the General Staff, but Eli asked and requested that he be transferred to the front areas, until finally he was posted to the Southern Command in the Shlomo region on April 30, In Abu Rhodes, he left a wife and a small child and was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Kiryat Shaul.
