Shefter, Gabriel (Gabi)


Son of-Rivka and Bezalel, was born on the 27th of Tishrei 5727 (27.9.1927) in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, and immigrated to Israel in 1934 with his parents who settled in Jerusalem. He graduated from the “Sokolov” Gymnasium and graduated from the “Amal” Technical School. For three years he served in a mobilized hachshara, first in Kibbutz Afikim and later in Ashdot Yaakov. On “Night of the Bridges” he participated in the explosion of the Allenby Bridge. At first he was considered missing, but when he infiltrated Arab villages he managed to return to his base. Twice he was arrested by the British Mandate authorities: first time on the Black Saturday, 29.6.1946, when he was arrested at Ashdot Ya’akov and transferred to Rafah and second – for carrying illegal weapons while carrying out his duties in escorting convoys (he was caught and imprisoned for 52 days) Kishla “in Jerusalem). During the War of Independence he served in the Harel Brigade and participated in escorting a convoy that had to bring reinforcements to Kfar Etzion. On the way the convoy was attacked and he was wounded in three wounds and forced to return to Jerusalem. Before he could recover he was called back to action. He participated in the battle of Mount Zion as a machine gunner, and even succeeded in destroying the Fiat position and blew up all its shells. Was among the defenders of the radar camp during a heavy attack on the Legion forces on the camp and its occupation. In this battle he fell on the 17th of Iyar 5708 (May 26, 1948), when he helped a friend who fell wounded. His last words were: “Do not tell my parents anything.” He was laid to rest at the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim.
