Sharabi, Yosef (“Yambo”)
Son of Yemima and Aharon, was born in 1929 in Rehovot. He studied at the Talmud Torah in Sha’arayim, near Rehovot. At a young age he went to work, studied the construction profession, where he worked and found his livelihood. He belonged to the “Hanoar Haoved” organization and was active in the branch in his place of residence. From the age of 16 he was a member of the Haganah. As a sports fan from his youth, he entered Hapoel and became a gymnastics instructor at the Hapoel branch in Rehovot. He also knew boxing. In the summer of 1947 he was sent by the Haganah to a course for squad commanders. After being ordained as a squad commander, he dealt with military training and guidance for members of the Hagana. Most of his nights and weekends were devoted to his duties in the Haganah. With the outbreak of events in Israel he was already in the ranks of the defenders, and on December 1, 1947 he enlisted in full mobilization and participated in various battles in the south. When the news came that Kibbutz Gal-On had been attacked by Arab rioters, he volunteered to go out with some members of his unit to defend the kibbutz. Was also among the escorts of the convoys to besieged Jerusalem. Participated in the explosion of the radar in the Jerusalem hills and in battles at Sha’ar Hagai. As the fighting intensified in the battle of Negba, he was transferred with his unit to this battle, and on Wednesday, July 11, 1948, he fell to a resting place in the heroes’ section of the military cemetery in Rehovot.
