Shapiro, Israel (Ginger)

Ben Leah and Alexander Hanania was born on 16.6.1927 in Tel Aviv. His father came to Israel in 1918 with the Jewish Legion whose volunteers were recruited in the United States and Canada, and his mother in 1922 from Ukraine. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, he was one of the first to respond to the enlistment order and served in the Golani Brigade. He was the head of reinforcements for the defense of Kibbutz Gesher. He was one of the saboteurs who blew up the bridge over the Jordan River and participated in the defense of the Degania Bet group against the Syrian armor. He acted courageously and saved many wounded under enemy fire. He also served as an instructor in the school for commanders in Bethlehem of Galilee, who had been abandoned by the German population. On the 16th of Tammuz 5708 (16.7.1948), during Operation Dekel, with the attack on the city of Nazareth, he headed a unit of recruits for an attack on one of the Mujidil authorities at the entrance to Nazareth. Was brought to rest in the military cemetery in Hadera, and on the day of the “thirty” of his death, a baby was born in the group and was named after him – Israel.
