Shapira, Yair
Son of Jacob and Leah. He was born on 8/1/1949 in Haifa and studied at the “Ahuza” elementary school in Haifa and afterward at the “Reali” School, and was a member of the “Scouts” movement. And he was very active in the company and was very active in the company, and was interested in various types of sports, especially swimming, he was a photography enthusiast and a lot of travel and photography everywhere. And abroad, after which he continued to be involved in aviation, and when he was a child he built models and modeled airplanes. He was drafted into the IDF at the end of October 1967. He was asked to postpone his service and join the academic reserve, and only after that did he enter the ranks of the IDF, but he did not agree. Knew that the IDF needed every young man, the borders of the country were hacked, the enemies were plotting and he had to give his share. Since he was not accepted into an aviation course, he made an effort to join the paratroopers, irrespective of the dangers that awaited him. Yair was accepted to the ranks of the Paratroopers, the spearhead of the Israel Defense Forces, during which he successfully completed a course and successfully passed an officers’ course, and as a platoon commander he excelled in his dedication to his soldiers and succeeded in turning his men into a cohesive and effective bloc. His last visit to the house was on Independence Day 5706, when he came from the canal area and greeted his family with a festive drop in Haifa’s stage. One day he was wounded in an Egyptian shelling in the northern sector of the Suez Canal, while he was commanding one of the strongholds. He was transferred to the bunker and even though he was seriously wounded, he calmed his soldiers out of contempt for the severity of his injury. Even when he lay wounded for a week in the hospital, Yair continued to fight with all his might with Mr. Death, without shouting or complaining, even though he understood that he had come to an end. On May 28, 1970, he died of his wounds. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery in Haifa. A member of his unit wrote to Yair in a letter that said, “I have known you for eight months, and in this short time I have admired you and your father as a commander and educator … Why have I never seen you angry?” Always the charming and paternal smile on your face. The verse says: ‘As an eagle he shall raise a nest, he shall keep his nest on his chicks!’, You guarded us, you worried about us – – And how could you leave a platoon that would take away from you ?! Yair was one of the officers of the battalion and his commanders respected his dedication to the commander, his friends loved him for his integrity and the joy of life in which his soldiers admired him for the personal example he presented to them and because of the attitude And Yair’s soldiers remained in the stronghold where he fell, and I wanted you to know that Yair’s death was a very serious blow to him. To his soldiers and more than anything else I want you to know that when we come to Yair’s young soldiers in order to encourage them, we explain to them that the death of your son is part of the price that the Jewish people pays in its war for its right To his honor and peace. I’m sure I can tell them that in your name too. We are at your hard time. In the memory of Yair, a corner of the physics lab at Beit-Biram was dedicated to the Reali School in Haifa, and a memorial to the fallen soldiers in the Paratroopers Brigade was dedicated to his memory.
