Shamir, Otniel (“Atai”)
Son of Moshe and Miriam, members of Kibbutz Dorot. He was born on July 28, 1942 in the kibbutz. With all his joy in life, his face always expressed seriousness and maturity. After completing elementary school in his kibbutz, he continued to study at Afikim High School until he completed 12th grade, was drafted into the IDF in August 1961 and served in the Israel Air Force as a pilot. He was in the instructors’ course at the Air Force’s pilot school and was a loyal friend of his brother-in-service. He reached the rank of captain, but when he finished his five years of service, which he signed, he returned home; He did not receive a vacation from the army for a year – because it would not have been possible if he had wanted to do so – but resigned from the permanent army to settle in his home and try to find his place forever, because he loved Dorot with all his might and was very attached to his family, And all that unique life-style characteristic of the kibbutz. After leaving the army he spent one summer in Europe touring various interesting places. In March 1965, he was trained as a flight instructor and served as a trainer until his discharge from the IDF in January 1967. In the spring of 1967, he returned to the kibbutz and returned to the kibbutz, where he was willing to leave any job he needed in the agriculture. The petition lies on the citizen of the state, like all his fellow pilots, and so he embarked on his last flight to the Syrian plane for one flight after many years preceding it – but he did not repeat that on the fourth day of the battles, he was Iyar 5727 (8.6.1967) Otniel was in a battle over the Golan Heights and his plane was shot down, but the remains of the plane were found but his body was not found in the area that was scanned and there were fragments of a helmet identified as Otanya’s helmet His body was not found and his tombstone was placed in his memory in the cemetery at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, where the kibbutz was founded, and on the anniversary of his death, Kibbutz Dorot published a memorial booklet in his name (together with the name of Amiram Assa). In August 1974, the body of Otniel was found and on August 14, 1974, he was laid to rest in the Kibbutz Dorot cemetery.
