Shamir, Eliahu (Elik)


Son of Ella and Aryeh, was born on June 15, 1924 in Tel Aviv. After a brief stay in the shepherds’ group in Nahalal, he returned with his parents to Tel Aviv where he studied, grew up and grew up. First he was educated in a kindergarten and at the “Tel Nordoi” school. He continued his studies at the Reali School “Montefiore” and later at the Mikve Israel School, where he graduated with honors from the agricultural mechanics school. From his youth he was a member of Hashomer Hatzair, an outstanding athlete in many sports, a member of Hapoel, a soccer player and swimmer, who won first place in a national youth competition. After completing his studies at Mikvah Israel, he enlisted with his comrades in the Palmach, who was then in his early stages in 1941. He was sent to a course for commanders, and from the day he completed the course he went all over the country as a guide, commander and sports center. His stations were: Kfar Menachem, Ramat Hakovesh, Ein Shemer, Givat Haim, Maoz Haim, Beit Hashita, Yagur, Kfar Yehoshua and more. After five years of continuous service he was released and entered civilian life in Tel Aviv, but here too his service did not stop. At the beginning of the War of Independence, following the UN General Assembly resolution of November 29, 1947, the division of the country into two states , Was sent as a commander to a remote point in the Negev, in the days that feared an early Egyptian invasion. He returned and enlisted with his friend, the company commander, Nahum Arieli, who established their company, which was entrusted with securing the road from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the section between the Hatikva neighborhood and Rishon Letzion. For two months he was able to command and participate in many battles against Yazur, Ramle, Beit Dagon and Jaffa, and was appointed commander of the moving guard of convoy security. On the 22nd of Shvat 5708 (22.1.1948), Eliyahu went out with his subordinates, a guard in Holon, to inspect the road before the morning convoy to Jerusalem, and at the entrance to Yazor, near the ice factory, they were ambushed. With the fire of the enemy, the van was hit and flared, the guards forced him out, took cover on the side of the road and fought with better enemy forces until all seven had fallen. He was laid to rest in the military cemetery at Nahalat Yitzhak. With their memory, his memory was also mentioned in the book “Shiv’a”, which was published one year after Nufelem. The writer Moshe Shamir, Eliyahu’s brother, recalled his memory in his book “With His Own Hands – Pirkei Elyak”. The moshav Mishmar Hashiva, established on the ruins of the Arab rioters’ village, is named after them.
