Shamai, Shlomo
Shlomo, son of Yaffa and Nissim Shamai, was born on November 6, 1929, in Damascus, the capital of Syria,
In 1931 he immigrated with his parents to Eretz Israel illegally through Kfar Giladi. After graduating, he began studying in the “Silver” factory in Holon. At the age of thirteen, he forged his birth certificate and he joined the ranks of the Haganah. During his service, Shlomo served as a scout and traveled the length and breadth of the country. With the outbreak of the War of Independence, Shlomo volunteered for the ranks of the defenders and served in the Givati Brigade. Eventually, he was transferred to the Tel Aviv area where he participated in the purification of various Arab villages. On the 3rd of Iyar, May 12, 1948, during Operation “Maccabi” to break through to Jerusalem, his force from the Givati Brigade drove a number of armored vehicles in order to transfer ammunition to the Harel forces in the eastern sector. Shomo’s car was attacked but despite the heavy fire on the car, Shlomo did not stop his duty until he was hit by a bullet in the head and was killedand was buried in Na’an. On the 13th of Av (27.7.1950) Shlomo was reinterred to the military cematary at Nachalas Yitzchok.
