Shaloush, Gabriel
Son of Perla and Jacob. Born in Jaffa on March 17, 1906. His mother was a descendant of Rabbi Shlomo Baruch, a scion of the Beit Din in Jerusalem, and his father was a member of Ahuzat Bayit, one of the founders of Tel Aviv and one of the directors of the Anglo-Palestine Bank in Jaffa. Gabriel received his first education at the “Talmud Torah” and at the “Ezra” school in Jaffa. He graduated from high school in Egypt and from there went to France to study engineering and received the degree of civil engineer. He also studied music at the Conservatoire of Paris. When he returned to Israel he became a contractor for buildings and roads, but he devoted time and energy to public activity. He was a member of the Association of Engineers and Architects, the Sephardim, a member of the “Tarbut” association and a member of the Haganah. On the 28th of Av (25.8.1938) he went to Jerusalem on work matters, near Ramla, was hit by an Arab bullet and after a week of suffering, on the 5th of Elul 5639 (1.9.1938), he was laid to rest in the Nachlat Yitzhak cemetery next to Tel Aviv. He left his parents, brother and three sisters.
