Shalev (Friedman), Yosef
Son of Haim and Tziporah. He was born on January 28, 1948 in Tel Aviv. When his age began to study, he began his elementary studies at the Yehuda Maccabee School. Afterward, he studied at the Amal vocational high school. He belonged to the Beitar Association as an active basketball player and played in the ranks of the youth group and when he grew up he played for the Betar North Tel Aviv senior team. He was also active in other areas of the same society – especially in the sea. More of his youth was naturally comfortable, a lively child full of joy. He also liked to help his friends, and any problem he was asked to find a solution for all concerned. In November 1965, he enlisted in the IDF and volunteered for the Navy, choosing the underwater profession whose demands included a high level of intellectual ability and an ability to analyze the reports that were submitted. In the “Crocodile”, the submarine whose operational mission was to operate near the enemy’s shores. He was an excellent diver, quiet and humble and therefore sent to England to join the Dakar submarine. When the submarine was on the sea route between Gibraltar and Haifa on its return to the port, the connection with it was severed and again it was not renewed. This was on the 24 th of Tevet 5728 (25.1.1968) – and the Chief Military Rabbinate determined that the date of Joseph’s death, in the course of carrying out his duties together with the rest, was on the 30th of Tevet 5728 (30.1.1968). Since Yosef was one of the missing members of the team, a memorial monument was placed inside him in a memorial to the Dakar people in the military cemetery on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. In Eran Shorer’s book “Six Days in Decker,” his picture was presented. On the 28th of June 1999, after years of searching, the INS Dakar submarine was found on the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, at a depth of 2,900 meters on its planned sailing route and 250 miles from the port of Haifa. A space whose burial place is unknown.
