Shachrur, Avraham


Son of Esther and Yitzhak, was born in 1906 in Safed. He was a member of the “Old Yishuv”, and lived there all his life. He studied in cheder, and at a young age started working. He raised a family and made a living as a porter. Avraham took part, in body and soul, in all aspects of the Jewish community, was cheerful by nature and always had a song in his mouth. On the eve of the liberation, he enlisted in the Haganah. On the 20th of Tevet 5708 (January 2, 1948) he brought vegetables in two crates hanging on either side of his donkey to Beit-Bussel, an isolated position of the Jewish area of Safed, He did not flinch from going out, even though he was warned of shootings in the city. A few meters from the gate he was hit in the head by a sniper bullet and died instantly. He was laid to rest in the Safed military cemetery. He left behind a wife and six children.
