Shachar (Sakharov), Israel


Son of Avichail and Tzilla. Born on the 8th of Adar, March 2, 1936, in Rechovot. He was a fourth generation in Israel, where he grew up and was educated throughout his life, from kindergarten, until he graduated high school. He took the opportunity to travel through the country, and to explore the old and new settlement sites. He was also interested in music, knew classical works, and also folk songs. He was a devoted and cheerful athlete. For a long time he was a member of Maccabi, and participated actively in its sports teams, especially the Maccabi Amos basketball team. After graduating high school, he joined the nucleus of the Nahal movement. He was drafted into the IDF in October 1954, and passed various courses. At the end of his military service he was about to move to Nahal Oz. He was killed on the 21st of Tishrei, September 26, 1956, in a battle against Hussan, driving his squad against enemy fire. He was laid to eternal rest in the military cemetery, in Rechovot. He was mentioned in Uri Milstein’s book, The Paratroopers War. The Municipality of Rechovot named one of its streets after him, thus commemorating his memory. The high school in Rechovot named the basketball court after him, and next to his plot, they erected a monument for him.
