Shabtai, Yosef

Yosef, son of Aziza and Avraham Shabtai, was born in Iraq in 1941. He was active in a Zionist framework in Iraq and at the age of sixteen he immigrated to Israel with his family. They settled in a transit camp in Jerusalem’s Talpiot neighborhood, where he worked in plastic arts and sculpture. Yosef joined the IDF and fought in Israel’s wars. In the Six-Day War he was in a company that disappeared for a few days, and extensive searches were carried out by helicopter until they were found. After his discharge from the army at the age of twenty-one he worked in odd jobs, such as renovations. Yosef later joined the Israel Police and served faithfully until his death. First Sergeant Yosef died on 20 Sivan, 27 June 1986. He was buried at the Mount Herzl military cemetery in Jerusalem, leaving behind a wife and three children.
