Segal, Amihud (Ami)

Son of Sarah and Ephraim, was born on 15 March 1930 in the settlement of Betania in the Lower Galilee. At the age of two, the family moved to Kfar Yehoshua and from then until the day he left for the distant Negev, for protection and battle, he rarely left his home and village for a trip or a job. He studied there in kindergarten and then in school, developing into a healthy, talented and kind child. At the age of 16, he completed and continued to study in his spare time from the farm. He began working in the agriculture at an early age and excelled at work. At the age of 16, all the farming work was done by him. From his youth he was a member of the local Haganah company, successfully completed his training, excelled in sports and was a favorite of his friends. With the outbreak of the War of Independence following the United Nations General Assembly resolution of 29 November 1947 concerning the partition of the country into two states, he participated in all the battle and defense activities of the valley and the north of the country and took part in the defense of Mishmar Ha’emek. He was sent home for a short vacation and returned to his base in Neveh Yaakov (Waldheim), where they went on a night-time to various operations, sabotage, explosion of bridges and ambushes from Shfaram to Megiddo. His friend and mentor also served. On May 15, 1948, the day of the declaration of the State of Israel, he succeeded in receiving a release from his unit in order to join the Palmach regiment in the Negev, and the Egyptian bombardment of Tel Aviv and the difficulties of transportation to the Negev at that time hindered him on his way, but with his strength and initiative he overcame every obstacle and reached his unit in Nir Am The next morning, the Mekorot camp, where Amihud’s unit was parked, was bombed and a bomb was killed on 10 May 1948. He was buried in Nir Am. On the 25th of Kislev 5712 (December 4, 1950) he was put to rest at the cemetery in Kfar Yehoshua.
